    Boston Children’s Hospital patients and their parents can now use Alexa to access information in their medical record, with the hospital announcing Thursday that it had launched a new secure function with the software.

    The rollout is the first time Amazon has enabled health systems to create functions that tie into a patient's medical record, in compliance with the federal government's health privacy rule known as the "Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act."

    As reported in SouthCoast Today, the Southcoast Health System, which consists of Charlton Memorial Hospital, St. Luke’s Hospital and Tobey Hospital, was named to Newsweek’s list of the World’s Best Hospitals 2019.

    Southcoast Health ranked 162 out of the 250 U.S. hospitals that made the list. Newsweek’s inaugural World’s Best Hospitals 2019, calculated in partnership with Statista Inc., recognizes the best 1000 hospitals across 11 countries: USA, Canada, Germany, France, United Kingdom, Switzerland, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Australia, and Israel.

    Momentum and support continues to build for telehealth commercial coverage laws across the United States, designed to ensure that covered members of health insurance plans can enjoy the full scope of their medical benefits – whether in-person or virtually. Last summer, the Massachusetts Legislature considered a sweeping telehealth bill that would have instituted certain requirements for insurance coverage. Although the 2018 legislative session ended before the proposed legislation was approved, Massachusetts legislators recently filed five new telehealth bills for consideration.

    The joint not-for-profit healthcare company Haven has hired another key executive, Dr. Sandhya Rao from Partners HealthCare.

    Rao, senior medical director of Partners Population Health in Boston, is Haven's new vice president of clinical strategy, according to CNBC.

    Haven CEO Dr. Atul Gawande is a general and endocrine surgeon at Brigham and Women's, which is part of Partners, one of the largest health systems in Massachusetts.

    Using the Massachusetts Prescription Awareness Tool will create better access to prescription data for clinicians at Partners.

    Partners HealthCare announced integration of the Massachusetts Prescription Awareness Tool (MassPAT), which enables access for providers to help prevent and manage substance use disorders, directly into its electronic health record (EHR) system.

    MassPAT is an online tool that promotes safe prescribing and dispensing patterns by allowing prescribers and pharmacists to access their patient’s prescriptive history within the past year.

    Insulin spending in Massachusetts skyrocketed 50 percent in just three years, according to a new state study. The increase is the latest example of the state’s continued issues around drug spending increases and health care affordability.

    The Health Policy Commission analysis was released Wednesday during a hearing, as the independent agency seeks to establish a benchmark for Massachusetts health care spending growth next year.
